Village Veterinary Hospital Recommendations for the Health and Well-being of Your Pet:  An age by age guide
Dogs
6-8 week old puppies: 
1st visit, physical exam, vaccinations, deworming, heartworm and flea prevention (1st doses of HWP and FP are free at VVH)
Vaccinations every two to four weeks, depending on the age and breed of the dog.  Spay/neuter at 6mos of age.  One to two more dewormings.   Fecal exam at last doctor visit.   HWP and FP according to the weight of the dog to be given once a month.

Adult dogs:
Yearly visits:  Heartworm test (also screens for three tick borne diseases), vaccinations, deworming, heartworm and flea prevention to be given once a month.
Vaccinations to include:  distemper/parvo (also includes adinovirus and parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, IntraTrac (kennel cough), Rabies, Lyme
Physical exam includes: ears, eyes, nose, throat, skin, teeth, joints, abdominal palpation, listen to the heart and lungs.  Examination of lymph nodes, rectal and prostate exams as indicated.  Pedicures and anal gland expression as needed.  Nutrition and weight management.
The doctor may recommend a dental cleaning.  See our info on "Dental Care" in the "Pet Library".

Senior Dogs: 
All of the above and also a Senior Blood Panel which includes a CBC, Chemistry Panel, Thyroid panel, and Urinalysis.  Please see our "Bloodwork Explained" and "Senior Pet Care" sections in the "Pet Library".  The doctor may also recommend a blood pressure test and an ocular test to screen for glaucoma.


Cats

6-8 week old kittens: 
1st visit, physical exam, vaccinations, deworming, flea prevention (first dose of FP is free at VVH), Feline Leukemia/Feline Immunodeficiency Virus testing.
Vaccinations and deworming every four weeks.  Fecal exam at last doctor visit.  Spay/neuter at 6 mos of age.  Dispense more flea prevention.    Flea prevention should be used every month on indoor/outdoor cats.

Adult cats: 
Yearly visits: vaccinations and deworming if indicated (indoor only cats may not need to be dewormed or vaccinated as frequently), dispense flea prevention.
Vaccinations to include:  distemper (which includes distemper, calici, panleukopenia), Rabies, Leukemia (if outdoors)
Physical Exam includes:  ears, eyes, nose, throat, skin, teeth, joints, abdominal palpation, lymph nodes and listen to the heart and lungs.  Nutrition and weight management.
The doctor may recommend a dental cleaning.  Please see our info on "Dental Care" in the "Pet Library".

Senior Cats:

Rabbits

Physical exam upon purchasing.  Annually thereafter.
Spay/neuter at 6 months of age.
No vaccinations required.


Birds

Physical exam upon purchasing.  Annually thereafter.
Beak, nail and wing trim as needed.
No vaccinations required.
